Nicole Johnson, a junior journalism student specializing in public relations, talks about her summer internship at The Door, an “idea house” specializing in marketing, PR and brand management.
This summer, I had the amazing opportunity to work with The Door, a public relations firm based in Chicago. The firm specializes in hospitality, entertainment, and the food industry, working with big names such as Rachel Ray, The Windy City Smokeout, and Girl and the Goat.
While most days were spent in the office, I was able to accompany the account managers to help their client, Acebounce Ping Pong, prepare for a TV spot on Windy City Live. Through this, I was able to learn firsthand the importance of a public relations agent in ensuring that their client is at their best for an important moment like being featured on a television show. I was also used as a background person during the shoot!
My day-to- day responsibilities included monitoring the media for stories and mentions of the firm’s clients, and creating a “clip,” or a short summary of the article to send to the client when they were mentioned. I also helped out with researching and creating media lists, researching potential new clients, writing bios about clients for the firm’s website and brain-storming unique ideas for
I greatly enjoyed my time as an intern at The Door, and gained the kind of experience and advice that can only be achieved outside of a classroom.
