Do you have a New Years resolution to make this semester your best one yet? You might think that includes a specific recipe of coffee, studying and a neat planner, but I have a few ideas on how you can go beyond the basics to achieve your goals this semester. With classes back in full swing on Monday, adopt these three tips to get off on the right foot.
- Connect with your professors
IU draws in some incredible professors, and that’s especially true for the Media School. Take advantage of that this semester. It will come in handy when you need a letter of recommendation for scholarships, grad school, etc., but you also never know what connections your professors have in the industry. Attending office hours and putting in the extra effort to connect with your professors could lead to some really great career advice and possibly even an internship.
- Find a balance
The hardest part about college for most people is finding that right balance between work and play. For your mental health, it’s important to schedule some time for yourself every day. Even if you can only squeeze in 15 minutes before bed, taking some time out of your busy day to do something you like to do will rejuvenate you and keep you focused on your goals.
Also, while classes and grades are first priority, don’t forget to have a little fun every now and then. Spend several days studying for an exam, but then reward yourself after with a night off from schoolwork. Whether that means spending time with friends or reading a good book, scheduling time for fun will lead to a more satisfying semester.
- Be more active in PRSSA
Take advantage of all that PRSSA has to offer this semester. Attend boot-camp sessions to hone skills that look great on a resume. Sign up for an agency tour. Come to the mass meetings and talk to someone you’ve never met before. Learn valuable information at events like panels with PR professionals and resume workshops. Be active on the committee of your choice. Also, remember those PR pods? Hang out together and you’ll get points for it!
PRSSA will really prepare you for a future career in PR, but it’s up to you to seize the opportunity.
